KFC ?

Hi there,

Perhaps you might be wondering what is that picture on the header of this blog, the one with the “KFC” written on it. Well, this is the original image:

This picture was inspired by an old friend who once owned a street food stall (or Warung Tenda as we would call it) in Jakarta selling low budget western style food. Such stalls are quite popular during the Asian Financial Crisis era. It started when several hotel chefs were laid off from their job and they decided to ‘hit the streets’ with quality 5 star hotel foods but at street prices. Wow, I can tell you, those were the days worth preserving in your memory.

He decided to name the Warung Tenda as “Kentarakaki” which sounds like Kentucky (as in KFC). It is taken from the word kentara (visible) and kaki (leg). The word speaks for itself. Most of these Warung Tenda are constructed only with a long table, a couple of stools, and a tent to cover the top. However, the tent does not reach down to the ground so you can actually see the legs of those sitting inside.

I would strongly suggest you to visit one of these Warung Tenda and enjoy the various food they serve. That is provided you have a strong and healthy digestive system though :) You see these stalls are built on street side which sometimes considered as un-hygienic. Well, in a way it’s true, but not entirely, especially to those who are already used to eating in such places. But if you insist, take my this advice from my American friend: (1) Never forget your diatabs or any kind of medicine you usually take for your stomach ache; (2) No matter how curious you are, just dont go their kitchen especially where they do the dishes because sometimes your eyes can deceive your stomach. Just wait and enjoy whatever they serve you; (3) Always remember, the roll of toilet papers on to the table is used to wipe your mouth. ha ha ha ..

BTW, I drew the picture in 2003. The original picture was hand drawn, but the image of me posing as Col. Sanders, as well as the words written on the tent was created with Photoshop. Too bad the original picture which is 25 x 20 cm, was spoiled when my house was flooded in 2001.

I love drawing, manually as well as digitally. I’m now slowly uploading my works to flickr. You can see some of them here if you’re interested. Would really appreciate if you could also leave your comments there :)
